Business Terms
Last updated: 13 October 2026 · Applies to business accounts on thedessertdetective.com
These terms apply when you create a business account, claim a shop, post updates or offers, or buy a Featured placement. They add to the terms of use and the content and review policy, which also apply to you.
Business customers are not consumers. The 14-day cooling-off period for consumers doesn’t apply to Featured placements or anything else you buy for your business. We show this before you pay.
1. Who these terms are for
Anyone using the business portal on behalf of a shop, café, bakery or other business. By creating a business account you confirm you are allowed to act for that business.
2. Claiming a shop
- We decide every claim. We may ask for proof that you own or manage the business, and we use the proof only to check your claim.
- We may reject a claim, or later revoke it or move it to someone else, for example to the real owner.
- One claim per shop. If someone else has claimed your shop, contact us.
- Market operators claim a market page the same way. Once approved you can keep its days, times, cancellations and extra dates up to date, confirm the dessert stalls that trade with you, and send events, which we check before they show. Keep the dates accurate: visitors plan trips around them.
3. Your responsibilities
- Keep your hours, prices, menus and allergen information accurate and up to date
- Honour every offer you publish (section 5)
- Make sure owner replies and shop updates follow the content and review policy
- Don’t post misleading information about your shop or anyone else’s
- Keep how customers buy from you accurate (Where to buy in the portal): a shop, markets, order and collect, delivery or post
- If you sell food made at home, be registered with your local council as a food business and follow its food hygiene rules. You confirm this when you claim, and we may ask for proof
If you don’t have a shop customers can walk into, we show only the area you choose and never your street address, full postcode or exact location. You give customers your address when they order.
Changes you make to your page are checked by our team, and we may edit or remove them.
Independent badge. When you claim, and later in the portal, you tell us how many locations you have and who owns the business. Owner-run businesses with up to three locations, and independently owned local groups of up to ten in one region, get the Independent badge. Your answers must be accurate and kept up to date. If a declaration is false or out of date, we remove the badge and may correct how your listing is marked.
4. Your content and our licence
You keep ownership of the photos, logo, menu and updates you upload. You give us a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to show, resize, crop and share them on the site, in our emails and on our social media, crediting you where practical. You can withdraw this licence by removing the content, except for content we have already posted (for example on social media). You confirm you have the right to upload it.
5. Offers
By publishing an offer you agree to:
- Honour every valid, unexpired code presented to you, up to the number you set
- Keep the offer’s terms (what it is, what it applies to, when it ends) accurate while it is live
- Accept that you or we may pause, end or delete an offer at any time; deleting it cancels unredeemed codes
We are not a party to the offer between you and your customer. If you don’t honour valid codes in good faith we may remove your offer privileges or take other action.
6. Featured placements
- The price and length of each placement are shown on the purchase screen in the portal before you pay.
- You pay upfront by PayPal (a one-off payment, or a monthly subscription where offered).
- Featured placements are always labelled “Featured” and shown separately from the normal results. They never change your reviews or ratings.
- We don’t guarantee any number of views, visits or sales.
- We may pause or remove a placement that breaks these terms or the content and review policy; no refund is due then.
- If we end a placement early for any other reason: we refund the unused days, pro rata.
- You can cancel a monthly subscription in the portal or in PayPal; the placement runs to the end of the period you paid for.
- You are buying as a business, not as a consumer, so the 14-day cooling-off period doesn’t apply.
7. Promotional offers
From time to time we may run promotional offers for businesses. We may change or end any promotional offer at any time, and each offer can have its own conditions.
8. Suppliers and advertising
Suppliers to dessert businesses (ingredients, packaging, equipment, labels and print, services) can list in our supplier directory. A supplier listing is not a dessert listing: it never appears on maps, in dessert search or on shop pages.
- Before your listing goes live we check it: your company number, or your confirmation that you are a sole trader, and for ingredients or packaging that touches food, your confirmation that what you supply is food-safe and meets UK food contact rules. We may ask for proof and may refuse or remove a listing.
- Keep your listing accurate: what you supply, where you deliver, your minimum order and how to contact you.
- Trade offers are shown only to signed-in dessert businesses. Honour them as written, as section 5 sets out for offers.
- Paid spots for suppliers (top of a category, a card in the business portal, a slot in our monthly business email) follow section 6. They are always labelled “Promoted”, and we decide where they appear and how many there are at once.
- Advertising must be legal, decent, honest and truthful, and follow the UK Code of Non-broadcast Advertising (CAP Code): no misleading claims, no health or nutrition claims that aren’t authorised, and nothing that targets children.
- We are not a party to any sale between you and a dessert business and don’t endorse any supplier.
9. No fake or incentivised reviews
You and your staff must not review your own shop or a competitor, reward reviews without the review saying so, or pressure customers to leave or change reviews. If you do, we may remove reviews and suspend or close your business account.
10. Reviews stay up
You can reply once to each review and report any review that breaks the content and review policy. You can’t have a review removed just because you disagree with it.
11. Ending
You can close your business account, or unclaim your shop, at any time. Your shop’s basic listing stays on the site as a public directory entry. We may suspend or close a business account that breaks these terms.
12. Liability
Sections 16 to 18 of the terms of use (warranties, liability and indemnity) apply to business accounts too. Nothing limits liability that can’t be limited by law. Questions: [email protected].
